Welcome to the 22 March, 2009 edition of the Get International Clients Sunday Blog Carnival.
Global Ethics and International Business
Bill George presents Ethics Must Be Global, Not Local posted at Business Week saying “In business school, we used to debate whether your business ethics should adapt to the local environment or be the same around the world. Many of my classmates argued, “When in Rome, do as the Romans do.” In other words, follow local practices. Those were the days when leading ethicists like Joseph Fletcher and James Adams at Harvard were promoting “situation ethics,” based on flexible, pragmatic approaches to complex dilemmas. I listened to their arguments but never could figure out how leaders of business organizations could operate with one set of principles in their homeland and another overseas.”
Holly McCarthy presents Outsourcing Pollution, With No Thought for Ethics posted at Principled Profit saying “When we talk of business ethics, we’re generally referring to the right way to do business, the moral way that leads to principled profit. But the advent of globalization has brought on a new kind of ethical value that we must bow to, but one which we tend to ignore because it doesn’t concern us directly. I’m talking about the process of outsourcing, a practice that’s pretty common these days because of the low cost of labor in countries like India, China and the Philippines.”
Jim Puzzanghera and Tom Hamburger present Goldman Sachs defends $13-billion payment from AIG posted at The LA Times saying “Wall Street powerhouse Goldman Sachs Group switched to offense Friday, contending that the $13 billion the firm received from bailed-out American International Group Inc. was fully justified and in fact was good for taxpayers.”
Lateef presents China and the United States: Trading Places (communism, capitalism, policy) posted at machete | the blog saying “Globalization. It’s still the reason for much animosity towards the world’s eight ‘major industrialized democracies,’ also known as the G-8. And while the U.S. has historically been one of the most criticized nations it is increasingly finding itself on the receiving end, as a great place to make fast and easy money. The rules are changing as the US begins to Nationalize failing businesses and China Privatizes state-owned organizations.”
de.borea presents Business ethics – just an excuse to act up posted at hyperborea saying “It is becoming more and more common for philosophy professors to teach business ethics. The University of Pennsylvania, for example, has four philosophy professors in its business ethics school within the philosophy department. Robert Solomon at UT Austin, better known for his work in existentialism, in his later years started teaching business ethics too.”
Glenn Hurowitz presents Celebrate 24,000 dead Americans! posted at Grist saying “The Competitive Enterprise Institute, a right-wing think tank, has announced it is holding a counter-protest to the Capitol Climate Action, the biggest civil disobedience on climate issues in U.S. history. They’re calling it the “Celebrate Coal! and Keep Energy Affordable” rally. A better name might be the “Celebrate 24,000 Dead Americans!” rally, because that’s how many people toxic pollution from coal-fired power plants kills every year, costing Americans $167 billion in additional health care costs.”
Bruce Weinstein presents Imagine a World Without Ethics posted at Business Week saying “Why do we behave ethically? Just think what life would be like if everyone did what they wanted, without regard for consequences. Much of my time is devoted to traveling around the country and giving speeches about ethics. Because this topic is of fundamental importance across all social groups, I’m hired to address people in business, education, health care, law, and the government. At the end of every talk, I ask the group, “Why should we be ethical?” Over the years, I’ve heard a wide range of responses”
Steve Priest presents We lost our ethical compass posted at Ethical Leadership Group saying “I have been trying to make sense of the financial meltdown for the past six months. Last week the long time head of audit for a TARP receiving bank crystallized my thoughts. “We lost our ethical compass” he moaned, trying to make sense of the chaos he faces.”
Holly McCarthy presents Outsourcing Pollution, With No Thought for Ethics posted at Principled Profit saying “When we talk of business ethics, we’re generally referring to the right way to do business, the moral way that leads to principled profit.
