If you are like most businesses today, you welcome international sales.
If you already get international business online, you probably do not really why you got in the first place.
This article is part of the Guide To International Lead Generation, which is just one of the marketing strategies in the Business Guide 4 – Build Your International Marketing Strategy essential for effective international business development. Be sure to check them both out.
For most online businesses, it often appears as if their international clients just walked in off the street. This is not usually the case. Your international clients have motivations just like your domestic clients. The trick is to uncover them.
- Would you like to find out what triggered those sales?
- Would you like to cultivate those triggers to get more international sales?
Look For Answers
Well you can learn to get more international sales if you already have some sales to analyze and work on.
You do not need to have hundreds of international sales. You can start with dozen or so international sales from your website. This is all you need to do a little research to find out where to get more.
The key is to find out how to make your current little batch of international sales grow into a steady stream. You need to find out how to market to people just like the international clients you already have. How do you do this?
Triggers
Before targeting your marketing to international markets, you need to research why your first clients bought from you:
- What happened?
- Was there anything in common between your first international clients?
- Can you identify a common event? Behaviour? Trait? Idea?
Common Denominators
The common denominator is the key.
Identify a common reason why your first international clients bought your product and you will be able to create a stronger sales pitch for the rest of your international markets.
Relevance
Your marketing will be more relevant for your international markets.
Example: Environment Triggers.
Bad weather or environmental triggers in your competitors market can mean more business for you.
Timely
You can create more timely marketing touches
Example: Financial Triggers
You can take advantage of any exchange rate fluctuations. Promote your products and services in areas where exchange rates highlight your financial advantage.
Results
Your marketing can be more effective.
Example: Legislative Change Triggers
Keep up to date on all legislative changes concerning your industry. There may be areas where your business can pull more international clients.
Stimulate Your International Business Growth
You need to get more out of what already works for you. This will take less effort than looking for new international clients. It will also help you identify your international potential.
Look for triggers. Look for the reasons why your current international clients bought from you.
All you need to do is a little research with what you already have. This research is often easier than you think.
A series of simple phone calls is often all it takes.

Hi Raji,
Thank you for your comment.
In order to get leads you need a good lead generation strategy. For international leads, you will also need some good international marketing.
To get started, have a look at my articles in the Beginner’s International Action Plan. This is the first guide in the Free Resources section in the middle of this blog.
To get results you need to market to one specific country. You will also need to identity an ideal profile for that country. Size of company etc. Only then will you be able to market directly to the people interested in your product.
If you don’t know which country profile to start with, you could start with a broad international marketing.
Use this stage for international market research, and move onto more targeted marketing as soon as you have identified the country and profiles you want to market to.
All the best,
Cindy
