Adapt Your Strategy To Find Your Full International Business Potential
Internet Marketing + Traditional Marketing + Integrated Marketing = International Business Expansion
In the previous issues we have looked at how companies can develop their international businesses without heavy investments if they rely on strategic planning. Today we are going to look at finding the right marketing mix.Marketing Mix According To Your BudgetA combined use of both internet and traditional marketing methods can be done on a small scale. This will keep marketing budgets to a minimum for companies just starting out in their business expansion,Using both traditional and internet marketing methods to gain foreign market penetration does not have to be expensive. You can rely more on internet marketing in the beginning. One of the key elements of making your international business expansion goals realistic, is communicating with your foreign prospects in a way that will resonate with them. You will need to budget the creation of content specifically targeted to your foreign market.Content specifically created for your foreign market will bring you international clients if it is used in an integrated marketing strategy. An integrated marketing strategy uses both internet and traditional marketing methods.
Use Content That Speaks To Your Foreign MarketsAn American company targeting the UK market should also create content specifically for the UK market. It will resonate better with the British. Thought should be given to which steps your budget can go through, and create different steps as necessary. If your marketing materials are written in an English that is very easy to identify as being American, and you are in Business to Business sales, you might simply consider having all of your promotional and sales materials slowly converted into an more “international” English. You could then target your foreign markets with single foreign language marketing actions appropriate to your industry.
Creating Foreign ContentA little thought and preparation is needed for creating culture or country specific content on a budget. You can start out small and use more marketing methods as your foreign business increases. But you will need to spend a more time to strategize your foreign content creation. Remember to provide for time for evaluations and readjustments to your strategy.Creating foreign market content is something that you will probably not be able to do in-house if you are currently only serving your domestic market. You will also need to spend some time identifying your selection criteria and then finding the right person to help you in creating your foreign content.
Differing International E-Commerce MarketsInternet marketing must be combined with traditional marketing methods to develop your business internationally. There are many variables involved in the differing degrees of e-commerce penetration in foreign countries. E-commerce may be evolving at different rates within the same industry in different countries. The results you can expect from internet marketing in your own domestic market will be different in your foreign markets. If you are relying heavily on internet marketing to reach foreign markets quickly and inexpensively, you need to know how your foreign market responds to e-commerce in your industry. One of the easiest and cheapest ways is to add a little traditional marketing together with your internet marketing mix.Are you serious about expanding your international business? Would you like to have your business revenues spread across a wider field to help you through any local recessions?Remember to use foreign exchange rates to your advantage when developing a foreign clientele. For example, North Americans should be aggressively marketing Europeans in 2008. Europeans will find North American products extremely easy on the budget right now.
What can North American companies do in addition to having a company website?
Look at your international client history. Are there any countries you could single out to market to? Choose one country first.
Start talking directly to your foreign market.
Create a local language monthly communication plan. Start online with a foreign language newsletter or blog.
This will keep your investment in foreign culture content creation down to a minimum. It will provide you a base from which you can carry out other specific internet or traditional marketing actions as the economy or industry demands.
Keep this regular communication going all year round and add some other traditional marketing in your local market,
Integrated Marketing
You will then be able to create a flow in what your foreign clients read and how they “touch” your company.
You will be able to leverage the traditional marketing with the internet marketing to stimulate interaction with your foreign markets.
The more feedback you get from your foreign market the more valuable information you have on your foreign market.
You will learn how they react to your products, the differences and similarities with your domestic market.
As you then learn more about your foreign market and can adjust your marketing for better results.
First, find the right way to communicate with your foreign market. They might like communicating with you through a blog, or a newsletter.
If you are on a tight marketing budget you will want to decide on the best format for your foreign content creation.
Have your content first created in that format, but plan on re-purposing that same content into different formats.
Once you have your communication channel defined, work on understanding how your foreign market likes your product and services. Stimulate feedback using your different marketing channels.
Your company’s foreign communication has just begun.
Triple Marketing Power
You can develop your international business using internet marketing, either directly selling your products or using by creating front end products specifically for this phase of your international expansion.
You can avoid developing your international business through traditional international development strategies involving high foreign investments. Or at least add this initial internet phase until you have defined your international market well enough to limit your risks of overseas investments.
Even if you know your business requires foreign partnerships to expand internationally, an initial international business development phase using internet marketing, will give you the in-house knowledge you need to find the right foreign business partner for your business.
This is the power of using Internet Marketing, Traditional Marketing and Integrated Marketing.
A better starting point for your international business development.
Example Of Websites With Global Business
It can be daunting when starting out. How do you go about creating a good global website and then culturally customized websites? There are many steps a company takes to become totally international. To give you an idea of what is recognized as a global website, have a look at another company website: Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu
www.deloitte.comDeloitte is rated by John Yunker as the 11th best global website in 2008.There are a few differences here than in the other global websites we have looked at so far. There is both a pull down country menu on the top and a big world map on the right in the middle. There was also a link in the list of most popular links with “worldwide” in the title that was a little confusing.I really liked the “Deloitte Global Site” link on the right on all of the foreign language websites. I also liked the fact that the pull down country selection menu on the top stays there on all of their websites. There is something else that really stands out compared to the other global websites we have looked at so far: the prominent use of social linking icons on Deloitte’s main website. The front page design has a line across the bottom quarter of the page highlighting a different section, so the eye is drawn there. And the second RSS feed link is there as well as the social bookmarking links.Corporate design seems to be changing to include good internet marketing practices.John Yunker researches and publishes a list of the best globalized websites.
Q And A
Question: What is the difference between International Marketing and Global Marketing?
Answer: First of all, what is International Marketing? I tend to use the most basic definition as this is what I encounter in multicultural environments:
International Marketing is simply marketing to people or companies outside of your own domestic market.
So how is Global Marketing different to International Marketing? Most people out in the field will say they mean the same thing. Most people refer to international and global marketing from one standpoint: when they are referring to one person’s or company’s marketing to a foreign market.
But I do actually see a slight difference if I’m on the receiving end of the marketing efforts.
Here’s my example of Global Marketing:
Nike’s Slogan:
USA: Just Do It
France: Just Do It!
= Global Marketing
Here’s my example of International Marketing:
McDonald’s Slogan:
USA: I’m lovin’
France: C’est tout que j’aime
= International MarketingThis is probably not a good academic example for company’s trying to define the difference. McDonald's is in fact a global marketing company. It was hard to find an example of International Marketing that all of my readers would be familiar with. This example does show how the marketing comes across to me as a consumer living in a foreign country. Nike is just flying around the planet at its own speed. And McDonalds is a bit closer down to the people in each country.
What does this mean to you?Well, if you are just starting to expand your international business, international marketing is where you will be soon. International marketing is researching and communicating within each country you are targeting. You are close to your foreign market.
