How To Use Online Translation Tools

For Your International Business Expansion

If you want to develop your international business, don’t let any language barriers stop you from doing any international research.Even if you don’t speak the same language as your target clients you can still get some international market research done.Free online translations should not be used for any of your sales or marketing materials. If your language is English, use English throughout your initial international development phase. But you really should use online translation tools to get some international market research first hand.

Evaluate Translation Tools In Action

Have a try yourself. Look up a foreign competitor’s site in their foreign language. Use the advanced Google search tool. It’s easy.

Copy a good block of text find on that competitor’s site and translate it. Use the tool at http://translate.google.com or copy the URL and translate the entire page.

This should be in a vocabulary you are familiar with. Read the translation. Analyse the quality of English you are reading. If it was a foreign competitor writing in his native language, the original text would have been good.

Often you will see a problem in the translation. And if you read the text fully you will realise it was because the original text had some specific jargon there that the computer software did not pick up.

This little exercise generally gives positive results. This translation will give you an idea of the quality of translation from your own language into a foreign language.

Google Translate

At present the Google translate site does 15 languages into English and the corresponding English translation into the same 15 languages.

If you are bilingual and speak one of the languages, do a test yourself. Read the resulting translation and you will have an idea of the overall quality of translation that you will have going into that foreign language.

Be careful with names.

For example, from German to English, ‘Schwarzenegger’ becomes ‘black’. The American poet June Jordan becomes ‘Juni Jordanien’, which is a translation of the month and county of the same name.

How Good Are The Online Translation Tools For You

Translation tools have come a long way since the original word for word translators but they do remain imperfect. Although you should not use them for everything, they can be a big help.

One of the big factors keeping some businesses from going international is the fear of big translation budgets for cost and time. If you look at the human versus computer translation dilemma a little closer you will begin to see options.

Online translation tools are great for foreign market research for example. They are also great for foreign competitor research. And basically all translations you need to read yourself.

Translation software can help professional translators and reduce your costs. Especially if the content you give the translator is easy to work with.

If you do start using these online translation tools you will naturally begin to see how you can create your own local content to make it easier for translation.

Becoming familiar with foreign content in your own language is one step.

The next step is becoming comfortable with communicating with foreign markets simply by reading their content. You will become accustomed to different outlooks.

It only requires curiosity and an open mind to begin with. And if you are truly eager to communicate with your foreign market, you will then naturally learn to adapt your own communication.

Your efforts towards international business expansion will lead you to look for and find ways to adapt your current communication to fit in better with low cost translations using the tools available today.

Easy International Market Overview

This is not as daunting as it may seem. Once you get used to the online translation tools and the level of translation you can expect, you will have a great tool to get to know your international markets better.

Simply spend a half hour every few days looking at your competition in a foreign country, checking out current industry news in the other country.

It is also a good idea to take this phase slowly. Give yourself time to adjust to the differences. And soon you will have a good overview of your international market and will be ready to take further action.

Example Of Websites With Global Business

It can be daunting when starting out. How do you go about creating a good global website and then culturally customized websites? There are many steps a company takes to become totally international. To give you an idea of what is recognized as a global website, have a look at another company website:

American Express

American Express is rated by John Yunker as the 12th best global website in 2008.At the top of the home page there is the link to reach the other country websites. The global web map and directory has an interesting tool with little speech bubbles next to certain countries in the list. This speech bubble helps to select a different language. This global map and directory is not in the same template used on the home page. While visiting other country home pages it appears there are a few different templates used.

Overall navigation is easy. The localized home pages have the global navigation in the local languages. This is often overlooked on other websites?

John Yunker researches and publishes a list of the best globalized websites.

Q And A

Question: What online marketing methods are needed for international business development?

Answer: That is a very good question.
Most online businesses do not take any particular marketing actions for international clients.

Here are the three ingredients that should come into your international internet marketing plan:

1. Good Internet Communication Practices
This is important. Good internet communication will give your will make your website easier for all visitors including your international visitors.

2. Cross Cultural Communication Skills
This can easily be narrowed down to focusing on two core elements:

  • Build Trust
  • Provide Clarity

3. International Business Good Practices
International business success demands taking things one step at a time. Rushing too quickly can easily complicate your international business development.
The main thing to strive for is getting feedback, dialogue, and understanding from your international market.
You may need to adjust your positioning, your product and your sales pitch to your international markets. The more information you have about your foreign prospects the easier this will be for you.

Online marketing that incorporates these three elements will give your business a head start in developing international sales.
