How To Leverage The Power Of Online Translation Tools
For Immediate International Business Development
Online translation tools are great tools for international business expansion. They eliminate much of the additional up-front costs of getting international clients.Online translation tools when used correctly can also mean getting your products faster to foreign markets.The two main reasons behind the success of the free online translation tools are:
- Businesses need more translations and need them more quickly than translators can provide
- The cost involved together with the need translate the amount of content and information company’s have today.
Professional translations take a lot of time. In international marketing this time is often calculated into the project. Translations can delay marketing and sales actions if you are not familiar with international business.
Online translation tools are almost instantaneous. One online translation tool translated the 179 page eBook “What is Man? and Other Essays of Mark Twain (Samuel Langhorne Clemens, 1835-1910)” from English to French in 30 seconds.
Reading the two versions of Twain’s work, it is obvious that the online translation is not prefect. But, it is still very readable if you need to scan through the story quickly. It’s just not perfect.
If you want to sit back and enjoy reading the book, you might not appreciate the speed and low cost of the translation.
Should the less than perfect results stop you from using online translations tools?
This lack of perfection is the main reason people advise not to use an online translation tool.
And yet, even the best translations, human or electronic, can always be debated or disagreed with.
Different translators will give you different translations. This does not mean that the translation is not right or inaccurate. Nor does this mean the translation didn’t get the message across accurately.
Translations can be compared to an art form in some cases.
Translators Now Using Electronic Translation Tools Or Software
There are many translators that use electronic translation tools to speed up the translation process. They then correct and edit the original electronic version.
A professional translator using an electronic tool will be able to complete easy pieces in practically no time at all.
The electronic tool makes it easier to translate by highlighting the parts of the translation that require more work. This speeds up the process and also reduces costs.
This type of service would be good for certain content that will be read by your clients.
Pure Human Translations
Other translators work from scratch and only translate after reading all the information that they receive, so they can translate the idea, as well as the words.
This is the type of translator you would go to for your important sales and marketing materials.
Static Translations Versus Non Static Translations
Keep in mind that there are two distinct types of translations to consider.
Translating a 179 page book from Mark Twain gives you a one time, static result. It does not need to be updated. Translating a website or sales document may need regular updates. There may be changes needed in the future. They may not be static pages.
Most companies are hesitant to spend money translating all of their content because of the volume of materials and the cost involved.
There is a standard practice among translators to charge by the word from the language of origin. Prices range from US $0.20 per source word and up.
The Mark Twain book in the example has 95,000 words. It would therefore cost a significant amount of money to translate.
It is very easy for a translation budget to become a huge expense.
And for businesses just starting out internationally, there is a risk in the return on investment within an acceptable time frame.
How To Get The Best Value For Your Translations
There are two key elements you need to consider when looking at translation costs:
Choose The Right Translation Methods
The first element is to choose your translation methods wisely to suit your needs and budget. In an ideal world
- Use the free online translation tools for your in-house market and competitor research.
- Invest in more powerful translation software if you have shelves of content you absolutely need translated.
- Hire a translator who works with translation software to speed up the translation time and reduce costs if you have a big project that needs translation quickly.
- Hire a good translation professional suited for your sales and marketing needs if you want results.
Create Content Strategically For Translations
The second element to choosing the right translation methods is to think strategically when creating your content.
This will make the above choices easier for you. It will save you time and money. It will make international business easier.
Here are a few elements companies look closely at to make translation easier and reduce costs:
- Plan for translations right from the start when creating content. For example: Do not imbed text in images. Keep slang and jargon out of your content. Speak to all of your audience.
- Standard tools available throughout the international markets.
- Formats that allow for easy translations. Such as templates.
- Company styles easy to translate, culturally appropriate across your market
As you become aware of the difficulties encountered in translations you will learn how to adapt the content right from its creation.
This will make your content easier to translate, without country specific jargon for example. You will be able to use the same content throughout all of your international audiences.

Example Of Websites With Global Business
It can be daunting when starting out. How do you go about creating a good global website and then culturally customized websites?There are many steps a company takes to become totally international.To give you an idea of what is recognized as a global website, have a look at another company website: Caterpillar
Caterpillar is rated by John Yunker as the 6th best global website in 2008.The Caterpillar website is definitely one of my favorites in this series so far. Why? Well it was so easy to get to the national website I wanted.I am located in France. It had identified my location automatically. There is a world map on the upper top right hand side, which very clearly told me I was on their French website and they asked me if I wanted to change. Of course I did, and it was easy!Their world map is broken down into areas of the world. Each country is spelled in the local language. The only thing was the regions of the world are in English.The templates are used throughout, with changes in the main pictures. Each country’s main page picture appears to be adapted its audience.All in all, this really appeared to be a very well globalized website.John Yunker researches and publishes a list of the best globalized websites.

Question: What is the importance of understanding the target culture for your international marketing strategies?
Answer: Well, all of your international marketing will depend on your understanding of the cultures in your foreign target markets.
If your business is just starting its international expansion, you will only get maximum results on your international sales and marketing efforts after you fully adapt your sales and marketing to the local foreign cultures.
This does not mean that you need to spend a lot of time and effort, investing heavily in translations before you actually enter your foreign markets.
Internet marketing gives you the option of targeting your foreign markets progressively.
* First by internationalizing your website,
* Then by creating a multicultural marketing campaign,.
* And then implementing a step by step process of localizing your marketing and sales in one target country after the other.
This will not only save you money but it will also give you the time to understand each target country’s culture and to adapt, adjust, and re-adapt your international marketing strategies for each foreign market.
