I think selling techniques are basically the same in every country, except there are different cultures that have different methods of negotiating. But real estate is the same, whether it happens to be in Australia or if it happens to be in New York. – George Ross

Adopt Your Marketing Mindset To Open International Business Opportunities
International business development is something most people assume as a by-product of simply having a company website. Of course you set up your company website to fulfill your current business requirements. But you have heard so much about global business opportunities. You also half expect some sort of quick and easy way to get a few international clients through the same website.
How many international clients has your company website brought in? Were there as many as you were hoping for?
In today’s world economy having business revenues from a broader geographical base can be comforting. Especially if a recession is threatening your domestic client base.
Is there an easy way for you to use your current company website to get more international clients? For real international business expansion, internet marketing needs to be combined with some traditional marketing and integrated into a multichannel marketing strategy.
Why Is It Important To Combine Internet Marketing with Traditional Marketing?
One marketing method tends to be more predominant. Companies tend to operate with either an internet marketing mindset or a traditional marketing mindset. This is often influenced by the personal backgrounds of the team, or the nature of the business.
From A Traditional Marketing Company
A brick and mortar business selling products to customers “in the flesh” will have developed strong sales and marketing expertise to do this. The company may have set up a website for easier communication with their regular customers. They may even have developed their client base with their website.
But if the same company also had incorporated current internet marketing practices real international opportunities could be uncovered. An internet marketer today would look for the best niche to exploit and aggressively apply internet marketing techniques.
Specialized stores may seem to have it easier. But a true internet marketer will be able to find a good angle for even more general type stores with a wide variety of products and services for sale.
If you think this could not be the case for your brick and mortar business, let an internet marketer come in and give his opinion.
From An Internet Marketing Company
Internet businesses that use traditional marketing methods, touching their online clients in different ways, always create stronger relationships with their clients.
With the growth of certain e-commerce industry segments, competition is being felt more strongly. Email marketing is not always working as well as it did in the beginning.
The key is to create opportunities to get your clients physical contact details. And then understand how your market would react to traditional marketing methods. Combining direct mail with online marketing campaigns has already proved it can work well.
The Right Marketing Mix
Finding the right marketing mix to use for developing your international business might take some time and require a little tweaking. The importance is to find how your foreign markets respond to each different touch.
Some countries will respond best to a certain marketing mix, while others will not. Internet marketing does give you a good base to work your international marketing from. But it will probably need a little bit of direct contact with your market as well.
Example Of Websites With Global Business
It can be daunting when starting out. How do you go about creating a good global website and then culturally customized websites?
There are many steps a company takes to become totally international.
To give you an idea of what is recognized as a global website, have a look at another company website:
www.netvibes.com
Netvibes is rated by John Yunker as the 7th best global website in 2008.
If you compare the Netvibes home page to the www.Cisco.com and www.Lenuovo.com home pages you will see a big difference in how Netvibes treat their international visitors.
At least I do, and I personally hate it. It goes directly to the French language page and I cannot easily identify how to get to an English language page.
Netvibes uses sophisticated software to recognize where the visitor is located and automatically redirects to that persons country interface.
I’m more or less stuck. The full page is in French, the little bit of navigation aids on the bottom are in English and I have no way of easily getting to a page in English.
Well, they might be 7th, but my visit was short and ended there.
This probably works for the type of business Netvibes is in. I find this a very good example of why it is important to decide how you let your visitors navigate to their own language.
John Yunker researches and publishes a list of the best globalized websites.
Q And A
Question: I don’t understand why the financial laws are so different from our normal regulations.
Answer: I am often surprised by some questions and rants some readers have with regards to doing international business. In order not to get too frustrated, you have to remember, there is not one established world legislation ruling above every countries import-export or all international finance.
The world is made of different countries with different rules, regulations and laws. Within each country the rules, regulations and laws for that country apply. Your country’s legislation does not apply to any other country in their territory.
There are international agreements. And these agreements do work most of the time. They will make life easy for you. But sometimes countries interpret those agreements differently. And sometimes countries have different ways of operating or doing things, so those agreements many not be so straight forward to implement.
And of course there are countries that do not sign certain international agreements.
Here is an illustration everyone should understand. Disposal of nuclear waste is a business. The companies doing this have to comply with the legislations in any country the nuclear waste is transiting through. It is easy to understand that you wouldn’t want a nuclear waste truck to break down in front of your local primary school.
But in different countries there are different habits, different ways of life. The countries have different histories, they developed differently. We can safely assume that from their point of view their rules, regulations and laws are better suited to their country than yours are. And that these rules, regulations and laws may well be different, or approached differently, or interpreted differently, or carried out differently.
Depending on what you are selling, you will need to do some industry research. You will need to check the rules and regulations in all countries concerned. Get as much information as you can from the relevant sources. And keep all of the contact details so that you know who to contact quickly in case you need expert answers quickly.
Remember you will have to do your own legwork to ensure you are complying with your countries import-export and international trade legislation as well as any other countries concerned.
