International Business Development Through Triple Marketing Power

- Part 1 of 5

Where Do You Start Your International Business Expansion?

Internet Marketing + Traditional Marketing + Integrated Marketing = International Business Expansion
In order to develop your business internationally and leverage the advantages of Internet you need to combine both internet marketing and traditional marketing. You need to use both marketing methods in an integrated marketing strategy. This will ensure your communication reaches your international audience.

In case you are wondering what the advantages of internet marketing are, here they are:

  • Inexpensive marketing
  • Easy to track results
  • Can be easy to quickly adjust marketing and sales strategies
  • Potential for wide international reach

While we are at it, what are the main advantages of traditional marketing methods compared to internet marketing methods?

  • Opportunity to create real relationships with clients
  • Clients feel closer to you, and have a tendency to remain more loyal to you
  • Some of your clients will only respond to this marketing method, or respond much better.

Can you see why it is beneficial to combine the use of both methods when expanding your business into international markets?

What is stopping most people from targeting foreign markets?

  • Not realizing they may have a market abroad.
  • Not choosing a country to start with
  • Not knowing how to establish a relationship with them if they speak different languages.
  • Thinking it requires a huge investment
  • Thinking it requires too much time.
  • Thinking everyone else does business the same way as your current clients do

Why is international expansion so important to companies today?

International sales have always helped companies get through slow times in their local economies. This is still true today. It is also easier today than it has ever been to develop a niche income from overseas clients with very little investment.

What is the key to getting international clients?

There is one ingredient key to your successful international expansion, and critical if you are starting completely from scratch:

A real desire to see where your company can go abroad.

A kind of openness to new markets. Curiosity combined with a drive for serving international clients.

Simple Steps With Internet Marketing

The steps for finding how to focus your international development are simple:

  • Start with a few small steps,
  • Try, observe and adjust your pitch and methods.
  • Then come back and give some thought about how your product fits into this new foreign market,
  • Try, observe and adjust once again.
  • Cross check your market knowledge with feedback from both internet marketing and traditional marketing methods,

These steps can be done by spending a couple of hours a week. They are small. But you do need to do them systematically and continually over and over again until you feel comfortable with the market knowledge you have. You will never get complete market knowledge, but you should probably to feel at least 60-70% there at this stage.

You will then have sufficient market knowledge of your foreign target country to create content specifically for your target market, to inform and educate them about your markets. The content you need will probably have to be outsourced. But you will know what you will be looking for.

Internet marketing is the ideal platform for this information marketing. With the new content you create for your international market you will also need to create an integrated marketing strategy to give your business more international visibility.

Over the next five weeks I’m going to show you how you can:

  • How to decide where to start
  • Change your mindset slowly to start looking for your international business opportunities
  • Create an integrated marketing strategy to generate international leads
  • Adapt your strategy to find your full international business potential

I will be covering these aspects in the next 4 parts of this 5 part series of the Get International Clients Newsletter and hopefully stimulate ideas for your international business development strategies.

Example Of Websites With Global Business

It can be daunting when starting out. How do you go about creating a good global website and then culturally customized websites? There are many steps a company takes to become totally international.

To give you an idea of what is recognized as a global website, have a look at :

www.lenovo.com

Lenovo is the company which purchased all of the IBM computer manufacturing.

If you simply click on the change button next to “United State” and notice how this brings you to a list of world regions and countries. Click on a different country, look at the website and then come back and check out another country website.

Note how there are several websites in French, each for a different country: Canada, France and Switzerland.
The website template is the same. The images were different when I last visited.

This is obviously one way of presenting different localized websites that is working today. Best practices in website localization have already evolved and will continue to do so.

John Yunker researches and publishes a list of the best globalized websites. Lenovo is 14th on the list for 2008.

Q And A

Question: I have a product for parents how to teach their very young children how to read English. I don’t have an international market do I?

Answer: Well for more international sales I have three main points.

First of all, from a marketing perspective, you should adapt your marketing message to each of the individual English speaking countries. This follows the exact same marketing strategy as creating specific marketing messages for each different market segment you may have. Your sales message will be stronger.

If you use internet marketing, remember to increase your local SEO results in each country. Just because you can be seen by the main search engines used in your local country does not mean you are getting the same results when someone searches for you in another country.

Also, do not exclude your market potential in non-native English speaking countries. Your company is an American company with a product currently aimed at an American market.

There is a large number of American’s living abroad. If they are living in a country and have children growing up in a foreign language environment, they would probably jump at an easy method of teaching their children to read their own language.

If your budget is small, you could easily use some traditional guerrilla marketing methods to target your international markets. I would suggest making a few phone surveys to the right audiences abroad, in English. Ask the key people you can identify to put up flyers in strategic points of contact for your target market.

Stimulate as much interaction and feedback. Once you have a better understanding of how to position your product abroad, you could then move on other marketing methods that require a little bit of investment.

If you start off small, with the main objective of acquiring as much foreign market knowledge as you can, and then move on investing in your foreign marketing strategies, you will learn how to appreciate your company’s international business expansion possibilities.

Take action now. Even if it is simply spending an hour calling people up each week. It will add up and give you time to get your business development strategy in focus.
